What is AT?

as·sistive Pronunciation [uh-sist-iv] tech·nol·o·gy Pronunciation [tek-nol-uh-jee]
- noun

  1. Assistive Technology is any device or service that increases, maintains, or improves the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities
  2. Assistive Technology device is any item, piece of equipment, or product system -- whether acquired commercially or off the shelf, custom made, or modified -- that is used to enable people with disabilities to communicate, learn, play, achieve, work, and be independent in their community

In other words, assistive technology refers to a wide variety of supports that not only make everyday living easier for the user; they make otherwise impossible tasks possible.
